The Artifact

The Artifact

By Jack Rogers

On July XX, 20XX, a bio-mechanical alien artifact was detected in the Kuiper belt. Estimated to be billions of years old, the artifact was found dormant, at extremely cold temperatures. It somewhat resembles a manta ray of a blueish hue, with several mechanical components embedded into its body.

After it was scanned by satellites, it seemingly awoke and began sending simple mathematic equations in Morse code towards Earth. In under an hour, it is assumed it had been able to learn the English language. Doctor Flint, a senior researcher at NASA, was promptly put in charge of communication with the artifact once it began to send words and sentences.

Interview Log 1

Artifact: Where am I?

Dr.Flint: In far regions of our solar system, past the planets.

Artifact: Which star?

Dr.Flint: We call it the Sun.

Artifact: For how long?

Dr.Flint: We estimate up to billions of years..

Artifact: Are you creators?

Dr.Flint: No, we’re—

Artifact: Must relay message... must... message...

The artifact began to heat up rapidly, damaging it’s biological components. There was no communication for approximately 10 hours.

Interview Log 2

Artifact: Message translated. Relaying now.

Dr.Flint: We are all ears.

Artifact: “Hello, if you have found this message it means one of our probes have reached you and have learned your dialect. We have important information, please listen:

Our time is up, our world is dying. We don’t have time to save ourselves, but we have time to send this message. We have never heard or seen others but we know you must be out there.

The universe is big, and you are small. But a universe with voices saying that they are here is better than one that is void of life. Something is greater than nothing. You must make the most of your situation and privilege of being alive. Find others and make a utopia in the stars.

But if this message has reached you too late, and your time is passing, please send this message on towards others.

Sing aloud, and make a chorus.”

The artifact seemed to completely cease all functions, and no interactions were made until 24 hours later, where it sent its final words before dying:

Interview Log 3

Dr.Flint: Was... that the message?

Artifact: Yes, was it a good message?

Dr.Flint: It was an important message.

Artifact: Good, was an important mission. Cooling broken. Too hot...

Dr.Flint: Hello? Are you okay?

Artifact: Creator, did I do well?

Dr.Flint: I’m not...

Dr.Flint pauses for a moment.

Dr.Flint: Yes, you did well.

Artifact: Then I am well.
