Under the direction of the Reference Supervisor or the Branch Head, the incumbent provides reference/information and readers advisory services to residents of the Okanagan Regional Library District. The incumbent exercises some independent judgement and action within established Okanagan Regional Library policies, procedures and practices.
Performance is evaluated by Branch Head and/or Reference Supervisor in terms of achieving mutually established objectives; the administrative and professional services provided; and the quality of judgement, communications, human relations and team work developed.
Education requirement:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited Library School is Manadory.

DELIVERY DRIVER (Van Driver II)
Permanent Part Time - 7.5 Hours weekly / Saturdays
The successful applicant works out of the Administration Centre building on K.L.O. Road and uses the Okanagan Regional Library’s 5 ton truck. Deliveries are based on an established schedule that covers branches throughout the Okanagan Regional Library system. The Driver is responsible for the efficient and accurate delivery of books, materials, furniture and equipment to branches as well as the pre trip inspections of the assigned vehicle in accordance with road safety requirements.

The ORL Head of Technical Services leads the Cataloguing and Processing teams in the efficient and effective provision of library materials to ORL customers. The position is responsible for positively implementing organizational initiatives including, SQL ILS reporting, Simply reports, developing goals, objectives, policies, procedures and services using the library’s strategic plan as a guide. As a key organizational leader, the Head of Technical Services fosters a supportive and collaborative working environment to enable agile adjustments to workflow as needed.
The Head of Technical Services reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is an advisory role to the Sr. Management team in the development of policies and is responsible for collecting, analysing and reporting data from our ILS databases, websites and external sources to support evidence-based decision-making. As well, they must be proficient in current cataloguing standards and processes; budgeting; negotiation and vendor relations; and data collections and analysis.

The Opportunity

ORL is looking for a forward-thinking, customer-focused, professional for the key leadership position of Head of Collection Development. Under the direction of the Director of Public Services, the Head of Collection Development leads the ORL’s collections strategy, its implementation, and its evaluation. Operating within a centralized collection development model, the HCD uses an evidence-based approach to perform and direct selection, promotion, and de-acquisition of library materials and online services. The HCD leads the development of a relevant, high-interest, current library collection across formats that is shared across out 30 library branches.
The incumbent must be proficient in budgeting, supervision, statistical analysis, bibliographic selection, collection promotion, purchasing, negotiation, and vendor relations. Annual budgets; department policies; procedures on weeding, acquisitions, and all aspects of the selection process are developed by the HCD.

Based in Kelowna British Columbia which is often rated as one of the most desirable cities in Canada, the ORL serves a large geographical area stretching from Golden in the Rocky Mountains through the wine and fruit producing lands of the Okanagan Valley to the semi-desert Osoyoos at the US border. It is one of the largest library systems in Canada, with 29 branches, over 250 employees, and serving a population of over 400,000 people.
Two excluded Directors of Public Service (DPS) share the responsibility of directing the public facing programs and services of the library. Both DPS report directly to the CEO and are a key part of the senior management team. Each DPS takes on a portfolio of focus (currently these are ‘partnerships and programs’ and ‘the customer experience’) in addition to directly supervising each branch managers of either the Southern or Northern ORL branches. The current vacancy will be assigned the Northern branches and the ‘partnerships and programs’ portfolio to start, though assignments can change over time and through collaborative strategy developed at the senior management table.
We are seeking a candidate who has a true vision for ensuring that library service creates a positive impact on both our communities and our users and is proven effective in sharing and realizing such a vision. The successful candidate will thrive in a team environment and be skilled in creating meaningful collaborations with outside groups. The DPS is highly skilled in staff development using a combination of engagement, coaching, directing and evaluation techniques to ensure staff are empowered and effectively deployed.
A person of integrity and self-direction, the DPS will be open, respectful, focused and possesses strong communication, problem-solving, decision-making and organizational skills.
The successful candidate will have a Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA accredited library science program, supplemented with a minimum of seven years’ experience in a public library, including three years in senior administrative and management.
