Pen & Pencil
Pen & Pencil
By Alexa Marie, July 24, 2020
The pen and the pencil were best of friends.
Everywhere they go, they’re together and in everything they do, they are too.
It’s as if no one can keep them apart.
No one tried to.
They were always beside each other inside the pencil case.
Never parting — unless individually needed.
Every moment was meaningfully spent with each other.
Every place was somewhere they'll never forget.
Every talk was something they’ll cherish.
Until one day, the pen has become aloof.
It wasn’t spending much time inside their sanctuary.
The pencil was sad about it, but it did not say anything to the other.
In those days, they can’t seem to catch each other.
When the other's up and alive, another is tired and sleepy.
The two of them don't have the chance to be happy and be lively together anymore.
As time passes by, they silently understood what was happening.
It turns out, the pen was always needed to function outside their sanctuary.
And the pencil was needed at the time the pen was sent to rest.
They were both useful but not at the same time, not together.
Then the pencil came to realize that this is how things are in this world:
You cannot be happy and be with the people you treasure
all the time.
It’s because there are duties and responsibilities we’re all bound to attend to.
When the people you treasure do not give you attention and care, try to understand.
They might not be in a good place that's why they cannot extend the courtesy you're expecting.
Also, they're probably stressed with their problems so you try not to add burden to them.
We need not to be cold and distant when this happens.
Be considerate and put yourself in their shoes for a second.
Keep in mind that everything will be fine at the right time and it's natural to have good days and bad days.
That night, the pencil slept with calm and peace inside their case.
It kept in mind that no matter how far and disconnected its friend pen is, their friendship’s the same and will always be.
