Okanagan Regional Library Introduces Air Quality Monitor Kit to Help Patrons Breathe Easy
by Michal Utko | Aug 21, 2024
The Okanagan Regional Library (ORL) is excited to announce the latest addition to its Library of Things (LOT) collection: the Indoor Air Quality Monitor Kit. This innovative new offering allows patrons to borrow a high-quality air monitor, empowering them to assess and improve their indoor air quality. This initiative is made possible through a collaboration with the City of Kelowna and Interior Health.
The Air Quality Monitor Kit, available at all ORL branches, is part of our ongoing commitment to support community health and well-being. The kit includes the Temptop LKC-1000S+ detector, which helps users measure the concentration of PM2.5 particles—tiny pollutants that can have significant health impacts.
Why Indoor Air Quality Matters
Indoor air pollution can come from various sources such as smoke, dust, and fumes, and it poses serious health risks, especially for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with chronic health conditions. The Air Quality Monitor Kit provides a practical solution for individuals to identify these risks within their homes, workplaces, or schools, and take action to improve indoor air quality if needed.
How to Borrow and Use the Kit
Loan Period
: 2 weeks, with one renewal if no other patrons are waiting.
Return Policy
: Kits must be returned to a staff member at the front desk of your local ORL branch. Do not use the book drop or leave them outside the library.
Usage
: The kit comes with a user manual to help patrons get started. It’s recommended to leave the monitor running in place for several hours to get the most accurate reading.
Engage with Your Community
We encourage patrons to share their experiences using the Air Quality Monitor Kit. Show us how you’ve improved your indoor air quality and join the conversation with #ORLMakes on social media. Your stories can inspire and educate others in the community.
Health and Safety Notice
While the Temptop LKC-1000S+ detector provides valuable information about indoor air quality, ORL advises users to consult their medical practitioners or Interior Health for health concerns related to air quality readings. The device is not a substitute for professional health advice or a carbon monoxide detector.
Quotes
Danielle Hubbard, CEO of Okanagan Regional Library, shared her enthusiasm for the new initiative: “We are thrilled to offer this valuable resource to our community. The Air Quality Monitor Kit empowers individuals to take control of their indoor environments, promoting healthier living spaces for all.”
"Interior Health is proud to support the Okanagan Regional Library's initiative to introduce the Indoor Air Quality Monitor Kit. Understanding and improving indoor air quality is important for maintaining overall health, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and individuals with chronic health conditions. By making air quality monitors accessible to the public the community is able to take right steps toward a healthier living environment. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this valuable resource to ensure the air in their homes is safe and healthy.” - Dr. Mema, Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer, Interior Health.
Chris Ray, Climate Action & Environment Manager for the City of Kelowna, added: “Collaborating with ORL and Interior Health on this project is a significant step towards our shared goal of becoming more resilient to climate change and improving public health. We encourage residents to utilize this tool to better understand and enhance their indoor air quality.”
