Getting Started with Sony Readers

For Sony Reader Wifi PRST1, 2, or 3, or older Sony Reader models (e.g., PRS500)

Here is what you need to get started with enjoying eBooks from the ORL eBooks collection

1. Do you have access to a personal computer and are comfortable using computers?
You will have to download software to your computer to allow you to borrow eBooks from the ORL when using the Sony Reader.

2. Do you have an ORL card and passcode?
You will need both to borrow digital books. If you do not know your passcode, please visit your closest library branch.You can also reset your PIN code online if your email address is associated with your library account.

 

Download the Sony Reader program

Install the Sony Reader program on to your computer. The Sony Reader program is used to authorise your Reader, manages the eBooks you have borrowed from the ORL and is used to transfer the book to the Sony Reader.

This free download is available through the following link: http://esupport.sony.com/CA/p/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=74&DIRECTOR=DRIVER 

Select your Reader Model, then select your computer's operating system to download the appropriate program for your computer.

 

Authorize your Sony Reader program and Sony Reader with an Adobe ID

Once the Sony Reader program is installed, you will need to authorize your computer and the Sony Reader with an Adobe ID. 

From the Sony Reader program, click on the Info button in the top right corner.

Click on Authorize found under the Reader for PC/Mac heading. 

A pop-up box will appear where you can type in your Adobe ID and password.

If you don not have an Adobe ID, click on the link in the box asking you to create an Adobe ID. You will be taken to Adobe’s website to complete Adobe ID creation. 

Go back to the Sony Reader program and fill your Adobe ID credentials and click on Ok.

Plug in the Sony Reader to the computer using the cable provided with the Reader.

Tap Data Transfer Mode on the Reader to complete the connection.

The Sony Reader will appear on the Info screen of the Sony Reader program and become automatically authorized with the Adobe ID.

 

Directly downloading titles to your Sony Reader Wifi

After the Sony Reader had been successfully authorized with the Adobe ID, click on theEject icon found next the Reader tab on the Sony Reader program to safely disconnect the Sony Reader the computer.

You can download titles from the ORL eBooks collection directly to the eReader over a wireless internet connection following the steps below.  

Are you using an older Sony Reader or want to download titles to your computer first? Go to Transfer downloaded eBooks to your Sony Reader using the Sony Reader Program.

 

Finding eBooks in the ORL eBooks Collection

On the Sony Reader Wifi, tap on the Browser button. 

Type in www.orl.lib.overdrive.com to visit the ORL eBooks website. (If you see a certificate error box, while on the ORL eBooks website, tap on continue)

Sign in to your library account using your library card barcode number nd PIN, this will allow you to check-out books in a few steps.

You can browse the eBook collections or search for eBooks using keywords.

Tap on the cover image when you find your eBook.

Tap on Place a Hold to be put on a waiting list for eBooks out on loan.

Tap on Borrow to check-out the book. If desired, change the lending period (7, 14, or 21 days) before tapping Borrow.

Tap Download and choose the format you wish to download for the eReader (Please note that Open EPUB and Open PDF formatted eBooks cannot be returned early). Tap Confirm & download.

Once the download is complete, it can be found in the Books folder on the Sony Reader Wifi

 

Renewing your eBook

You may renew your eBook, if there are no requests on the title.

The renewal option will become available next to the cover image of the borrowed title on the Checkouts page of your Account on the ORL eBooks website 3 days before the title is due.

Renewing a title is just like putting yourself first in line to check out the title again.

If the Renewal icon is dark, click on it open the renewal form. Confirm your email address and click the Renew button. You will get an email when the title becomes available for check-out at the end of its initial loan period.

If the Renewal icon is greyed-out, this means there are requests on the title. You can still complete the renewal form, but you will be added to the wait list for the title and notified when it becomes available for you to borrow again.

 

Returning eBooks early

Tap Books or Bookshelves on the home screen of your Reader.

Press the Menu button, and then tap Return Books.

Tap on the eBook you wish to return.

Tap Done to return the title to the collection and remove it from your account and your Reader.

 

Viewing the ORL eBooks website on the Sony Reader Wifi may be slow to load and can be difficult to navigate by touch. You may find it faster to download eBooks to the Sony Reader program on your computer and then transferring them to the Sony Reader Wifi, following the instructions below. 

 

 

Transfer downloaded eBooks to your Sony Reader using the Sony Reader Program

Finding eBooks in the ORL eBooks Collection

Visit the ORL eBooks website at http://orl.lib.overdrive.com.

Browse the eBooks collections or search for books using keywords.

Click on the cover image when you find your eBook. If desired, change the lending period (7, 14, or 21 days).

Click on Borrow to check-out the book, you will be brought to the Checkouts page of your account.

 

Downloading your eBook and transferring it your Sony Reader

From your Checkouts page, click the Download button next to the book, and choose the eBook format you wish to download for your eReader (Please note that Open EPUB and Open PDF formatted eBooks cannot be returned early). Click Confirm & download.

Depending on your computer:

Choose to Open the file with the Sony Reader program, from the options that pop-up.
Or
Select Save from the pop-up box, once the download is complete, select Open with from the pop-up box, and choose to open the file with the Sony Reader program.

Connect your Sony Reader to your computer.

Tap the Data transfer mode button on the Sony Reader 

On the Sony Reader program on the computer, click on the Reader tab that appears when your Sony Reader is recognized, click on Sync in the top right corner.

This will add the eBooks you have downloaded to the eReader.

Once Sync is complete, click on the Eject icon next the Reader tab on the Sony Reader program.

Unplug your Sony Reader and find the eBooks in your Books (or Bookshelves) folder on your Reader.

 

Renewing your eBook

If the Renewal icon is grey, this means there are requests on the title. You can still complete the renewal form, but you will be added to the wait list for the title and notified when it becomes available for you to borrow again.

 

Returning eBooks early from the Sony Reader program

From the Sony Reader program on your computer: 

Click on the book you would like to return.

Click on the return to library icon at the bottom of the program screen.

Please note that Open EPUB and Open PDF formatted books cannot be returned early).

Please note that if your ORL card has expired or you have outstanding late fees of $20.00 or more, you'll be unable to borrow from this collection. Please visit your library branch to re-activate your card.
