Listening to eAudiobooks on MP3 Players or iPods

Here is what you need to start enjoying eAudiobooks from the ORL eBooks collection

1. Do you have access to a personal computer and are comfortable using computers?
You will have to download software to your computer to allow you to listen to eAudiobooks borrowed from the ORL.

2. Do you have a compatible media player that will play the eAudiobooks borrowed from the library?
You can check what devices are compatible at http://help.overdrive.com/customer/portal/articles/1481731-mp3-players.

3. Do you have an ORL card and password?
You will need both to borrow digital books. If you do not know your password, please visit your closest library branch. You can also reset your passcode online if your email address is associated with your library account.

 

Download the OverDrive program

If you will be listening to the eAudiobook on a compatible MP3 player or iPod. install the free OverDrive program your Windows or Mac Computer.

You can find the software download link on the OverDrive website: http://app.overdrive.com.

This program is used for downloading eAudiobooks, managing and listening to your borrowed titles, and transferring your eAudiobook to an MP3 player.

If you will be transferring the eAudiobook to an iPod, you will also need to have iTunes installed on your computer. You will need to set iTunes to Manually manage music and videos for your iPod before you follow the steps below to transfer the eAudiobook to the iPod. Finding eAudiobooks in the ORL eBooks collection

Visit the ORL eBooks collection.

Sign in to your account using your ORL card number and password. 

Browse the eAudiobook collections or search for books using keywords. eAudiobooks have a headphones symbol on the cover image of the book.

Click on the cover image when you find your eAudiobook.

Click on Place a Hold to be put on a waiting list for eAudiobooks out on loan. You can also opt to automatically borrow the book when it becomes available.

Click on Borrow to check-out the book, you will be taken to your Bookshelf page in your ORL eBooks account.

If desired, change the lending period (7,14, or 21 days) before clicking on Borrow.

 

Downloading your eAudiobook to the OverDrive program

From the Checkouts page on your account, click the Download button next to the book.

The OverDrive program will open.

Click Ok on the Get Media pop-up box.

Click Ok to download the eAudiobook to OverDrive program.

You may also select the OverDrive Listen option to play the eAudiobook online through your browser. No downloads or programs, you only need an internet connection. Find out more about OverDrive Listen from OverDrive Help

 

Transferring your eAudiobook to an MP3 player

From the OverDrive program, click on the eAudiobook you wish to transfer.

Click on the Transfer button. This will open the Transfer Wizard feature, which will help you through the transfer process with on screen instructions.

Connect your MP3 player to your computer. Click Next in the Transfer Wizard. 

Once your media player has been automatically detected, click Next to start the transfer.

The eAudiobook files will transfer to your media player. The Transfer Wizard will let you know when all the files have been added to your device.

Click Finish in the Transfer Wizard.

Safely eject your MP3 player before unplugging it from the computer.

 

Renewing your eAudiobook

You may renew your eAudiobook, if there are no requests on the title.

The renewal option will become available next to the cover image of the borrowed title on the Checkouts page of your account on the ORL eBooks website 3 days before the title is due.

Renewing a title is just like putting yourself first in line to check out the title again.

If the Renewal icon is green, click on it open the renewal form. Confirm your email address and click on the Renew button.  You will get an email when the title becomes available for check-out at the end of its initial loan period, after which you can check-out  and download the title again from your ORL eBooks account.

If the Renewal icon is grey, this means there are requests on the title. You can still complete the renewal form, but you will be added to the wait list for the title and notified when it becomes available for you to borrow again.

 

Returning eAudiobooks early

eAudiobooks can be returned early if you are using OverDrive program on a Windows computer.

From the OverDrive program, click on the eAudiobook you would like to return.

Click the Delete button, then click on Return/Delete to return the eAudiobook to the library collection and to remove it from your ORL eBooks account.

Exception:  Early returns are not available for eAudiobooks downloaded to Mac computers.

Please note that if your ORL card has expired or you have outstanding late fees of $20.00 or more, you'll be unable to borrow from this collection. Please visit your library branch to re-activate your card.
