Rejoin the ritual of saving seed and sharing the abundance in our community.
The Westbank Seed Library has some great varieties to start your garden off right this year including butternut squash, herbs, and some delicious varieties of tomatoes. You can ‘borrow’ up to 10 packs of seeds per household.
How to get seeds
Follow these steps to get seeds:
1. Go to the Westbank Seed Library station at the Westbank Library
2. Ask staff for a seed library form. Browse and pick out the seeds you would like to borrow and grow. Seeds are stored in labeled, pre-filled envelopes;
3. Fill out the provided checkout form with the varieties of seeds you have selected and bring it to the library service desk on your way out.
How to return seeds
To return or donate seeds, follow these steps:
1. Harvest seeds from your heirloom vegetables in the fall; (Tip: refer to our seed saving step by step guide for how to)
2. Put the seeds into an envelope or container and clearly label it with the seed variety and year of harvest. (Tip: You can pick up envelopes at the Westbank Seed Library station);
3. Bring your labeled seeds to the Library and drop them off at the library service desk. They will be added to the collection so that other people will be able to check them out next year. Donate at least one packet of new seeds back to the library.
Opens: Spring - Start picking up seeds April 1st.
Closes: Fall - Return seeds by November 1st.
