Congratulations Jeremy Woo! June 22, 2010

Representatives from the Okanagan Regional Library presented 15-year-old Jeremy Woo with his $200 prize pack for winning the ORL’s “Name the Marmot” contest at the Vernon Branch last Friday. Jeremy suggested the name “Flippy LePage” for the ORL’s new mascot and his creative moniker garnered 22.2% of the 3,000 votes cast. In recognition, the ORL’s Coldstream representative, Maria Besso, presented Jeremy with gift certificates for Earl’s and Atlantis Waterslides and three books on Canadian history.

When asked how he came up with the name, Jeremy commented, “It was actually really silly. I noticed Flippy and Paige had already been suggested, and just thought of putting them together as in ‘flip the page’”.

Jeremy has just completed Grade 10 at Kalamalka Secondary and is an avid curler, lawn bowler, and student leader. He is part of a Safe Schools anti-bullying club and a member of Team Green, which encourages students to be environmentally sensitive, and is a regular library user.

“The library is not only a place to get books, but also a place where you can gather, meet and share ideas, and have access to the internet, which is the world’s biggest information source,” Jeremy said. “I’m so excited about the new branch coming in Vernon.”

In fact, Jeremy is so supportive of the library he promptly donated two of the books he received back to the ORL system.
